As someone that has observed Lent for a number of years I was fortunate enough to have Lent and the giving up of something for Lent explained to me this way. It is a time of year where we practice and strengthen our self control. The idea of giving up something is to exert self control over our lives.

Giving up something for Lent is ultimately a form of fasting. We can deprive ourselves of some small pleasure or indulgence and offer that sacrifice up to God.
